I told you Saturday has been a sad day. Saturday morning I received a telephone call from the West Coast to let me know that the Reverend Cecil Dodson, Sr., pastor of the Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church of Seattle, Washington, went home to be with the Lord.
Pastor Dodson embraced me as a young minister while I was serving at the Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church of Portland, Oregon as the Administrative Assistant to Pastor Johnny Pack, IV. He gave me opportunities to preach at Mt. Pleasant culminating in serving as their Evangelist for their Annual Revival for several years consecutively. Matter of fact, I was told that I was the only out-of-town evangelist that he ever brought in to preach.
I cherished those weeks at Mount Pleasant – they were special to me because of the pastoral kindness of Pastor Dodson, his supportive wife, and the Dodson family. They sacrificed to make sure that the Revival was a success from year to year and I enjoyed preaching there year to year. Pastor Dodson had old fashioned “preacher sense” and it was a church filled with musically gifted people, led by the Dodson family.
It’s been many a year since I last spoke to Pastor Dodson. Ministry does that to you when you relocate from one place to another and I’ve moved four times (Fresno, San Diego, Nashville and Frankfort) since those days in Portland and Seattle – but every now and then, when talking with friends from Portland and Seattle, his name would come up and I would ask how is he doing and how’s his church coming along.
Rest in Peace Pastor Dodson – you led Mount Pleasant over 30 years with historic distinction. Thank you for helping me become the preacher I am today.
UPDATE: HOMEGOING SERVICES FOR PASTOR CECIL DODSON, SR. WILL BE SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2012 AT THE ROSE HILL MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH, DR. SHELBY L. TATE, PASTOR AT 11:00 A.M.
