Homegoing of a Saint: Rev. Joseph R. Sheppard, Irving, Texas

The Rev. Joseph R. Sheppard was known as a giant in the ministry both in knowledge and stature. A tall, distinguished man, he served as pastor at Ben Washington Baptist Church in Irving for nearly 52 years, making him what many believe is the longest-tenured pastor in the city.

Along with preaching, the minister changed lives in the Bear Creek Community, one of the oldest black settlements in the state. He helped start the West Irving Improvement Association, which brought the neighborhood city services and ended segregation.

Sheppard, 77, died Monday of cancer. His funeral will be at noon today at Calvary Church, 4401 N. State Highway 161.
